How to Go Paperless
- Get in the habit of scanning things. You don’t need a fancy scanner to do this, your smartphone can handle it. There are also apps that help you scan documents, such as CamScanner.
- Sign up for everything online. You can get eStatements, bills and other documents online instead of in the mail. Most of the time you just need to check off a box to activate that feature. Some stores and services will also give you the option to opt for an email receipt rather than paper.
- Shred what you don’t need. If you scan the important documents, you can then shred the paper version. Small home shredders are fairly cheap.
- Store digital files in more than one location. Some people are nervous about digital files because they’re afraid something may happen to their computer. Besides saving to your computer, you can use cloud-based services like Google Drive, Dropbox or Evernote. This will allow you to access your files on any computer or mobile device at any point in time.
