Migration is a key topic all over the World. People want to move for several reasons, some just want to move for no reason at all. Some factors that inform migration includes Economics, Health, Family Environment, Fear, Adventure, Ignorance, Curiosity and even plain old Stupidity, to mention but a few. In this article, we outline some financial truths about migration.
- Money is Never the Number One Hindrance to Migration:
If the reverse was true then all the rich people would live in certain countries and all the poor people would leave in certain countries, but there are folks who have a ton of money but can’t leave their country of birth for reasons like improper documentation, improper source of wealth, ignorance, etc. The moral of the truth is that you do not need all the money in the world in order to migrate! You need more courage than money to leave your country of birth for another country, this is known as the fear of the unknown.
- Despite Point Number One, It Will cost you good Money to Migrate:
Begin to plan financially, if you intend to move to another country at some point in your life. Do note that before you move you will need to spend money, during migration you will need to spend and after you settle down in a new country you will still need to spend out of pocket for a long time, do not let anyone deceive you, there is no free lunch even in Freetown, put aside a migration fund to help you fulfill your dream.
- The better your Skills the easier it is to Migrate – Spend to Skill-up:
Skills in Banking, Engineering, Information Technology, Food, Accounting, Nursing Languages are always in high demand globally. If you have plans to migrate at some point in your life then spend some money and devote some quality time to build your skills in any of these areas. Personally, I like to skill up in the information technology space where attitude, rather than aptitude, is the name of the game. This basically means that with the right attitude of daily consistency you can acquire any skill in the information technology space in preparation for your desired migration.
- The Stronger your Documentation, The Easier it is to Migrate; Therefore Spend now to obtain proper Documentation:
Officially legalize all your document where possible, be it birth documents, educational documents, marriage documents, etc. For Marriage, make sure to get a government-approved document that signifies consensual union with your partner, this could come back to haunt you if left undone, same for kids gotten outside of wedlock. The more official documents you possess, the easier it is to settle down and integrate into another country when you do migrate.
- The Easiest Route to Migration Success is Education, therefore save for your Education:
Settling down in a new country involves unlearning and relearning. This too will cost you money. You do well to start early by setting aside a learning fund to help you get updated educationally when you arrive in your new country.
Final Word: Migration has tremendous benefits and offers one the opportunity of seeing the beautiful vagaries that the World has to offer. More so, the story that the grass is always greener on the other side may be true after all, and only those who cross over to the other side can enjoy these greener pastures. The courage to make the move is usually the deciding factor but as we have pointed out, finance is also a critical factor!
